May 15, 2020 - Return of the Rufous Hummingbirds

In 2019, I did not record a sighting of a Rufous Hummingbird at all. They normally arrive at our backyard feeder in April or early May each year. Last year we spent four weeks in Italy from mid-March to mid-April. Perhaps they came early and saw no food and moved on.

Our winter-resident Anna's Hummingbirds go elsewhere (maybe north) for the late spring and summer and then return in fall/winter.

This year a Rufous pair has shown up and is using our feeder consistently. My first photos were taken on May 15.

Here's the female taking her turn, it seems only one will feed at a time even though the feeder has multiple ports.

Here's a couple of short movies of them taken on May 22 with my Nikon P900. Female first and then the male.

The next post gets me back out in the field again at the Iona Sewage plant and at Surrey Lake.
